I recently learned about something called the captive bedroom aka tandem bedroom. It could be known as other names too. But it falls into the category of the various ways that sellers try to bump up the value of their property. I didn’t encounter this issue as much in the towns I normally look at real estate. But as I step into Pittsburgh, it seems to be a common thing with the older homes. This setup could be a difficult problem to remediate given the tight space constraints that are usually involved. You may not recover the cost of construction given the incremental rents you can charge. One option is to take it for what its worth and price accordingly to buy the property or rent it out.
