Illusory Superiority

Below Average

Posted on December 19, 2020 by Arnold Lau

I saw an interesting post on how to frame your your place in the world and overcoming various bias. https://sive.rs/below-average

I think the observation is “Illusory Superiority” I can’t speak to the studies done on this type of cognitive bias, but I do have anecdotal observations on this bias. When I played poker regularly, I don’t ever remember any of my regular poker buddies admitting to be losing money at poker. If you ask any business owner, they tend to exaggerate their numbers.

What does this mean for my daily life?
Being self aware and constantly improving can help you to avoid making costly mistakes. Over confidence in your abilities leads to careless mistakes, ignoring advice from others, and blind spots. I try my best to keep an open mind and hear what other people have to say. Welcoming input from others could lead to some powerful insights or spark a creative new idea.
